Polybutylene (PB) pipes were used extensively in home construction from the late 1970s to the mid-1990s. PB piping was heavily marketed and extensively used during that time period as a low-cost, easy-to-install option for plumbing systems in new home construction.

Because it is flexible, plumbers could easily install PB piping, and for good measure, it was considerably cheaper than copper piping. At the time, its promoters claimed it would last as long as copper. Some even said it would last a lifetime, but those claims proved to be colossally wrong. So wrong, in fact, that some have called PB piping “the danger lurking behind your walls.”

The Problems with Polybutylene Pipe

So, what’s wrong, is polybutylene bad? The short answer is, yes it is, and there are several things that contribute to the problems associated with it. These could include:

One of the most unfortunate things about PB pipes is that they tend to deteriorate from the inside out. That means that because there is often no exterior sign of damage, the pipes may have been leaking for a long time, inflicting considerable damage to property, before the leaking was even detected.

But how do you know when replacement is the right thing to do? To help you prepare for that eventual need, here are some things to watch for, signs that your hot water heater is nearing the end of its useful lifespan and the time to replace it is near.

The age of the heater

Every component in your home has an expected lifespan, including your water heater. As we said, the average lifespan of a traditional tank heater is about 8 to 12 years, and if yours has reached the ten-year mark, there’s a pretty good chance your older water heater is operating on borrowed time and probably will need to be replaced in the near future.

Cloudy or rusty water

Five Home Remedies for a Clogged Toilet

Try Using Dish Soap

Pour about ½ cup of liquid dish soap into the toilet bowl. The soap provides some lubrication for the plumbing pipes, and that may be enough to allow the clog to slip through.

Baking Soda and Vinegar

This mixture is an alternative to dish soap. Pour one cup of baking soda and two cups of vinegar into the bowl and let the chemical reaction fizz for about a half hour. If that doesn’t work, try the next step, hot water.

Add Hot Water

If the dish soap or the baking soda/vinegar mixture doesn’t remedy the problem, then try adding some hot water to either. Fill a bucket with hot water from your tap, and holding the bucket at waist height, pour the water into the toilet bowl. The force of the falling hot water, combined with the soap or baking soda/vinegar mix may move that stubborn clog.

Note: Do not use boiling water to try to clear a clog as this could create cracks in your porcelain toilet.
A Straightened Coat Hanger

If you don’t happen to have a drain auger in your toolbox, a coat hanger may do the trick. Straighten the hanger and then push one end into the clogged area. Keep prodding the clog until it comes loose and flows down the drain.

A Large Plastic Bottle

First, put on some rubber gloves, and then use a small container and bucket to remove as much water as you can from the toilet bowl.

Next, fill a large plastic bottle with warm water and place your thumb over the top. Place the top of the bottle into the small drain opening in the bowl, remove your thumb, and squeeze the bottle to force water down the drain. This added pressure may dislodge the clog.

How Fast Does Mold Grow After a Water Leak?

There are a number of things affecting the growth of mold. These include the surfaces that are affected, the temperature and humidity levels, and the type of mold that is present.
